These maroon quartz crystals are a hard mineral made of silica. They have an opaque outer coating of the iron compound hematite that can glitter and shine. Most quartz crystals are created around molten magma, but they can also be formed by geothermal vents or anywhere that can reach high enough temperature and pressure.
